Hello, thought I ought to say hello. We have a mutual acquaintance in Beau Bo D’Or and I have just been writing in part, about your problems with the Now image.

I noticed you mention on B3TA you are having cluster headaches. Yours may not be caused by the same thing, admittedly, but I had cluster headaches for 20 years. They were absolutely crippling, the doctors were totally useless and said things like “you’ve got a migraine, try cutting out coffee”. I have worked it out now, and I haven’t had one for the last 6 months. I am tyramine intolerant, I changed my diet and the headaches stopped.

It’s not easy, and it takes a few weeks for them to completely go, but it worked for me. What they don’t mention on the list is tobacco and all dairy products must be cut out, what they don’t really stress strongly enough is that all your food must be absolutely fresh. Damning as this is to the catering industry, you must not eat at a restaurant or fast food joint, ever, unless you want to be ill. The food is never, ever even close to being fresh. I have had so many holidays and events ruined by this. If you want to drink, drink cider or vodka (but with coke not with orange). Never drink beer, wine or whiskey, they are the worst.
Hope this helps, I hate to think anyone else would suffer like I have.

Thanks for the information Keith, really helpful to me
Been suffering with them for 9 years now, 5 of those years undiagnosed properly. Have tried various means of combatting them, to the point now where I don’t drink any alcohol, smoke, or take any caffiene at all, and as you suggested, most of my food now is completely fresh, or prepared from fresh. Thankfully the inability to take normal tea/coffee due to cutting out the caffiene has also reduced my dairy product intake drastically as well, and thankfully, ‘attack periods’ have been less frequent, and the severity less than I have had in the past. Usually, I get attack periods on and off for 6 months of the year, and generally for between 3 weeks and 2 months at a time with anywhere form 6 – 15 or so cluster ‘attacks’ a day. They’ve just come back for another stint and hopefully with the precautions I’ve taken I can control them better, and the info. you’ve provided will certainly help I’m sure.
Many thanks again, Keith. As a fellow sufferer, you’ll KNOW how much I appreciate any info on dealing with Cluster headaches. Really appreciated
Hey man
You really from Hendon? Me too, must be the police college sending out psychic vibes that are doing us in!
Do you know, I wrote all that when I was filthy drunk on home made cider and the next day I couldn’t for the life of me remember your name, and I hadn’t done anything useful like bookmark the page, and I just saw you again on B3ta and thought aha, that’s the guy.
Well, as is obvious I haven’t cut out booze! I can’t stress enough how bad the dairy products are for me though, 100g of cheese (which wouldn’t make me a decent sandwich) contains up to 250 mg of tyramine, 6mg is the trigger level. I got done by 2ml of milk in a cup of tea when I was feeling my way around the problem and I was measuring everything, I gave up at that point. Caffeine in tea has never been a massive problem for me, but coffee gives me the shakes. I use oat milk (www.oatly.com) and it does a pretty good job at pretending to be moo milk (not man milk). But I am very glad that this has helped, I have suffered since I was 17 and like I said, it is only the last 6 months I have got a handle on it.
Other stuff, MSG is a trigger, so any ketchup or similar sauces, any chinese food, anything with the word “extract” on the ingredients (doesn’t matter what, extract of ANYTHING is just another name for MSG, that is why almost all breakfast cereals have malt extract in them, otherwise they would taste of what they are, basically sawdust), bananas are bad news too, the dopamine has a similar effect, and for the love of god stay away from coke and speed unless you want a headache AND a psychotic episode! Grass won’t hurt you, as long as there is no tobacco in it (and you don’t fall over!).
Also, what the doctors don’t tell people is that MAOI anti-depressants (which they dish out like sweeties) can cause you to become hypersensitive to tyramine, if you are already sensitive to it then the tablets combined with the wrong diet can cause hypertensive crisis, which can lead to a stroke, kidney failure, heart attack, or all three at once. But it doesn’t say anything about that in the book that the pharmaceutical company gave them, so (of course, stupid) that doesn’t happen.
It would take a heart of stone not to wish it all upon them, and normally I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
Take care, and I hope you never have need to hold your head in your hands again.
