Something New… October 30, 2008

White Elephant: A valuable possession which its owner cannot dispose of and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) exceeds its usefulness.

Just a little something that sprang to mind over this whole Russell Brand/Jonathon Ross malarkey.  While they’re all busy in the U.S. getting ready to determine the next leader of the free world, we’re more interested – ‘apparently’ – in watching a media witchhunt over a couple of presenters indulging in a badly judged schoolboy prank.  With thanks to Beau Bo D’Or for a post on his blog which inspired the above image.

Apologies for the long absence from here.  If anyoe out there does still stop by, big post to come later about more image theft by national newspapers.  Happy days!

Oil prices reach a record high last Friday of a little over $135 a barrel, which obviously means that Petrol and Diesel have gone up again. It doesn’t seem all that many years ago that I remember the entire country up in arms at the prospect of Petrol reaching 90p a litre, and every HGV known to man was out on Britain’s roads in protest.

It’s gone up to £1.30 a litre for Diesel in my neck of the woods today, and what action is planned? Zip. I live in a rural area with infrequent public transport and rely on the car for just about everything. (unfortunately) Can anything be done about it? Is there anything that will help Darling realise that he is excessively…

It made me think back to a classic scene in Porridge…

Incidentally, and just to clarify, the title of this post refers to a line spoken by Fletcher to Mr. Mackay in the aforementioned scene, and does not represent any anti-Scottish feeling… Just thought it best to clarify before potential comments start…

And if anyone has been reading it, apologies for the long period of absence over the last few weeks on the blog. Should now be getting back to normal I hope.

It has been suggested today that School-leavers should be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to Queen and Country as a mark of respect, and also to make them feel like they ‘belong’ to society. I personally can’t think of a better role model for all Teenagers, and expect that the details of the ‘oath’ will reflect that…

The Archbishop of Canterbury is currently under fire from all sides over comments he made about Sharia law being adopted in part here in the UK. Criticism has also come from within his own Church, leaving him ‘overwhelmed by the hostility of response’ which must now leave him wondering…
